What do you think of this for english coursework...? I got to choose which topic so I can change... 10 points? Okay, I used it as an article (I write for the local magazine) but I wondered if it would be suitable for an English oral?
Okay, I’m going to try something different this week. I figure that I have the power to make people think if I really want to as I have my thoughts published and maybe I could, for once, make those thoughts something interesting or meaningful and not just a meaningless and random stream of anecdotes all ending with the words "because I have such an interesting life", don’t get me wrong, I believe in myself but just thought I’d add a bit of variety to my archive of loveliness. This week I’m going to be writing about double standards within weight, but before I do I would just like to mention I am not anti-anyone just because of their size so please don’t stab me.
Okay, firstly I’d like to ask a rhetorical question. Why is fat an insult? I mean way back when, back in the day when everything was made from wood and there was no intermaweb to hold us humans back… When we had to make our own amusement from stuffing cheerios up the weedy guy’s nose, being plump was a compliment, it was like wearing Versace when everyone else is clad in Primark…
But although I acknowledge people’s negative body image is a problem, particularly when, according to History, they should regard it as their main asset this isn’t what bugs me. It’s the double standards we have. See, a large girl can say whatever she likes about me, I can be a “skinny, heartless know-nothing” and if I even imply she is slightly over-weight (hypothetically speaking, I wouldn’t do that) it’s as if I’ve killed her family or something. Another thing relevant to the whole double standards are those people who are pro-large but anti-skinny. Being proud of your natural body shape is brilliant. As is defying the image the media paints as perfection (people like, well, insert name of runway model here) but what I don’t think is okay is the way that some of them criticize thinnner people. Like, for example, I have been told before that I am “not a real girl”. Well, woah, that sure did cut me deep (not). What is this? A sizeist version of Pinocchio? Just because I am under a certain weight it doesn’t mean you can mindlessly bombard me with minor insults. Another example of this is a Mika song including these exact words:
“You take your skinny girl
Feel like I'm gonna die
'Cause a real woman
Needs a real man here's why
You take your girl
And multiply her by four
Now a whole lot of woman
Needs a whole lot more”
Erm, so… what is this exactly? (Apart from patronizing to larger women… ) It’s saying that thinner women are less significant or less important than larger ones? I mean, it’s not like skinny girls everywhere all rose up in one big body holding a gigantic sign that says “I hate fat people” or something equally personally upsetting so why get personal with us? I can imagine not many people are going to like this article because I can’t imagine many people will find it funny, but I’m just using my power to be able to share my ideas with, you as an audience, to a slightly more meaningful purpose than telling you something mildly amusing I thought up earlier. Although, if this weren’t enough thought for the day, how about this: Do you think I could get surgery to convert my stomach into a marsupial pouch and convince Simon Cowell to jump on in?” Well, of course because of my fairly skinny frame I would need a skin donor if I were to successfully transform myself into an indie kangaroo (if anyone’s interested I’m sure you could email Alex and he could give you my number). Thanks for listening. I’ll be comical next week, I promise.
Thanks, and yeah I can learn all that. :) | If there are no stipulations as to what the topic has to be, I think the above article's subject matter should be very appropriate. Not only is it interesting, but it deals with an issue that greatly effects your audience. However, to make it suitable for an English class, the speech needs to be more formal than what you have written down above. Also, there are several grammatical errors that would need revising. I would consider adding more facts and information regarding the topic into the speech as well.
